What would you think of a Christian brother who ran a protection racket in your neighborhood, extorting money from business owners, but who nevertheless thought he was on his way to glory? What would you think of a Christian man who spends his Sunday mornings with you at church, and his Sunday nights stealing cars, but who nevertheless has assurance of his salvation and is looking forward to reaching heaven by and by?
These two men think there are no eternal consequences for their willful, habitual sin. And so they continue professing Christ while practicing lawlessness. But are they any different from the man who professes Christ but who watches pornography willfully, habitually? Find the answer in 1 Corinthians, chapter six.
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Here you see the first two men we were contemplating. You see the extortioner who thinks he is inheriting the kingdom of God. And you see the thief who believes the same thing. But you also see the fornicator who thinks he is destined for heaven. The fornicator is the man who commits fornication, which is to say, sexual immorality. Sexual immorality is any act that defies God’s commands about sexual relations. Sex outside of marriage is sexual immorality. Sex with animals is sexual immorality. Sex with yourself while viewing pornography is sexual immorality.
If you think you can intentionally and regularly view pornography and still inherit the kingdom of God, this message is for you. Paul wrote this warning to the church at Corinth precisely because there were professing Christians in that church who believed you could be an extortioner, a thief or a fornicator and still inherit the kingdom of God. You can’t. They were deceived. What about you?
