Something happened in human history to prevent you from looking at pornography. Jesus Christ died on the cross. And you, if you are saved from your sins by faith in His atoning sacrifice, were also crucified with Him. That is, your sinful nature was crucified with Christ when you repented of your sins and trusted in Christ as your Saviour.
You read about this marvelous transaction in a few places in the New Testament. One of them is in the sixth chapter of the book of Romans. Here, Paul the Apostle says:
“For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”
Romans 6:5-6
You have likely seen dozens of depictions of the crucifixion of Jesus over the years, in Children’s Bibles, museums, art galleries, and movie theatres. But have you ever seen your own crucifixion depicted? You should. Imagine that you are one of the malefactors who was crucified with Jesus, because you were. The soldiers walk with you to Golgotha. You are carrying your cross. The crowd is jeering at you. You arrive at the place of execution. You strip naked. You lay your cross down and lie on top of it. You spread your arms and cross your feet. The soldiers pound nails into your hands and feet. They raise the cross into a vertical position and drop it into a hole in the ground. Then they leave you there to die, a process that takes days.
This passage in Romans tells you and other believers that your old man was crucified with Him. That is, your old self, your human nature without the Holy Spirit, was nailed to a cross just as Jesus was nailed to a cross. Your old man died just as Jesus died. You were buried in the likeness of Jesus’ death. And you were raised in the likeness of His resurrection. Today you are alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Why did this happen? Why was your old man crucified with Christ? Paul tells you. So that your body of sin might be done away with (destroyed, annulled, rendered useless), and so that you should no longer be a slave of sin (Romans 6:6). If you want to get the victory over pornography, masturbation or any other sexual sin today, look back to yourself crucified with Christ. Crucified men don’t commit sexual immorality.
