Porn and the Penalty for Inaction | Matthew 5:29

Achieving sexual purity will cost you plenty. But not as much as you’ll pay by doing nothing.

You have heard that it was said to those of old, “You shall not commit adultery.” But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Matthew 5:27-29

Will your whole body be cast into hell because you refused to install a porn-blocker on your laptop? Maybe. Will God cast you into hell because you refused to replace your smartphone with a dumbphone that can’t access porn? Perhaps. Will your body be thrown into hell because you scorned this warning of Jesus and never cancelled your subscription to that X-rated website? Maybe.

Jesus teaches you and me that we must deal with the causes of our sexual temptations in this life or pay the penalty for our inaction in the next. That’s the heart of this divine warning from the Master—the penalty for inaction. You don’t end up in hell for lusting after women with your eyes as much as you end up there for knowing that your eyes cause you to sin but refusing to do anything about it. You get punished because you don’t pluck out your eye. You don’t cast it from you. You don’t take any actions to eliminate the causes of sexual temptation. So your inaction, says Jesus, costs you your life. You end up in hell, that is, the place of everlasting punishment, the final place of punishment of the ungodly.

To eliminate porn from your life, you must pay a price. To use today’s vernacular, “Eliminate your triggers, or else.” Pluck out the people, places and things in your life that cause you to sin sexually, or end up in hell. Eliminate the electronic devices and TV shows and social media and websites and businesses that cause you to look at women to lust after them, or end up in hell. Eliminate what causes you to sin sexually, or be cast into hell.

Achieving sexual purity will cost you plenty. But not as much as you’ll pay by doing nothing.
