Why I Use Accountability Software as a Christian Man

The whole reason for having an accountability partner is to be accountable to someone. That can only happen if you make sure you can’t hide your sin.

To Resist Sexual Sin, Look Up. | Genesis 39:9

Want to discover the easiest and fastest way to quit porn? Get caught. Arrange your life so that anytime you look at pornography, someone catches you in the act, and then confronts you about your sin. This is what I do. Works for me.

I am talking, of course, about electronic accountability. When it comes to getting free of pornography, there are two types of accountability—someone, and software. An accountability partner is someone who helps you stay committed to moral purity. Accountability software monitors and reports on your Internet usage.

You can have a human accountability partner but not use accountability software, and vice versa, but victory comes sooner if you use both. After all, if you have an accountability partner but no accountability software, and if you sin by looking at porn, you can always “forget” to mention that episode, or lie about it. Your accountability partner will never know. And if you have accountability software but no accountability partner, you will get a notification from the software anytime you sin, but no one else will know, which amounts to no accountability at all.

The whole reason for having an accountability partner is to be accountable to someone. That someone helps you stay on the path, encourages you when you fall, rebukes you in love when your thinking is off, and helps you keep Christ as the focus of your life. I have discovered over the years that accountability only works for me if I have a guaranteed way of getting caught by a human being. That’s why I use both an accountability partner and accountability software. My partner holds me accountable for my sin, and the software makes sure they do, because I have no way of looking at porn without them finding out.

I happen to use Covenant Eyes on all of my electronic devices, but there are other options on the market. Covenant Eyes monitors my activity 24/7. If I visit an inappropriate website with my laptop, or look at sinful images on my phone, or browse sexually immoral images on my tablet while at work, Covenant Eyes takes screenshots of my activity and emails them to my accountability partner. Then my accountability partner sees those images and confronts me. The fear of getting caught in the act keeps me from doing the act. Knowing for sure that I will get caught keeps me pure.

I know of no faster and easier way to avoiding porn than this tag team of Someone and Software. Your results may vary, of course. But if you are serious about quitting porn, why not give both a try?
