Make Sure Your Sin Finds You Out | Numbers 32:23

In my daily battle against porn, when I ensure that my sin will find me out, it does. And that makes all the difference. Vulnerability leads to victory.

“But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.”
Numbers 32:23

Four of the most beautiful words ever written in the English language are: “We Believe in You.” I see these four words each morning when I boot up my computer. They are found in a daily email report that I receive from Covenant Eyes, the company I use to block porn and hold me accountable online.

The Covenant Eyes app, installed on my desktop, laptop and tablet (and smartphone, if I still had one), keeps me accountable by taking screenshots of where I go and what I do on my devices. Covenant Eyes uses artificial intelligence to detect explicit content. When it catches me looking at pornography or nudity, it takes a screenshot and sends it to my accountability partner. The AI catches explicit content on websites, in apps, in downloaded images and videos, and in DVDs. Basically, if porn appears on my screen, Covenant Eyes knows about it, and tells on me. As you can imagine, this is a strong incentive for me to abstain from sexual immorality on all of my electronic devices.

If I get through a day without looking at porn, Covenant Eyes notices and says, in its daily report, “We Believe in You. We did not detect any concerning screenshots from your devices. Keep it up!” I like these daily encouragements because they remind me that yesterday was a day of victory. As I write this, I have six month’s worth of these supportive emails sitting in my inbox. They remind me of how far I have come in my daily battle for sexual purity.

I use Covenant Eyes primarily for this feature. Yes, the app also blocks explicit websites automatically. But I can still search for and view images and videos that are inappropriate. Covenant Eyes doesn’t block them, but there is a good chance that the AI algorithm will flag them and take a screenshot of them. My sin will no longer be my secret. Covenant Eyes helps me get discovered. My sin finds me out. Praise God.

One of the keys to my daily victory over pornography is this electronic accountability. I have a human accountability partner who holds me responsible for my sin, but my electronic accountability partner, Covenant Eyes, keeps me accountable 24/7 by uncovering any sexual immorality I commit on my electronic devices. Covenant Eyes does this automatically, and ruthlessly. But this is what I need, a constant partner looking over my shoulder who shows me no mercy when uncovering my sexual sin.

This is not a plug for Covenant Eyes, by the way. I use it because it’s the app I know and trust. It works for me. If you can find another app that holds you accountable by sending screenshots of your activity to your accountability partner, go for it. The secret to success is exposure. In my daily battle against porn, when I ensure that my sin will find me out, it does. And that makes all the difference. Vulnerability leads to victory.
