Watching porn is a sin. And sin requires a biblical remedy. Here is what I’ve learned the hard way about what Christian men must do to quit porn biblically.

(This is the transcript of my 60-minute course of the same name. Watch the course here.)

Two of the primary problems with pornography are that it’s available and that it’s anonymous. You can access porn from anywhere, 24 hours a day, and you can do so without anyone knowing. To quit porn, you must meet these two problems head-on. Here’s how you do it.

Install a porn-blocker

If you are serious about quitting porn, install porn-blocking software on all of your electronic devices. That means your desktop PC, laptop, tablet, and phone. I use Covenant Eyes. Porn blockers, also known as porn filters, block pornographic websites, apps and images from showing up on your devices. They help you

Are you struggling with porn addiction as a Christian? This article provides practical and biblical advice on how to overcome this addiction and live a life of purity.

man with kite symbolizing Christian overcoming porn addiction

In today’s world, access to pornography is easier than ever. As a result, porn addiction has become a significant problem, even within the Christian community. If you’re struggling with a porn addiction, know that you’re not alone. Many Christians face the same battle, but there is hope. With the right tools and resources, you can overcome this addiction and live a life that is pure and pleasing to God. Here are some steps you can take to overcome porn addiction as a Christian.

Understanding Porn Addiction and Its Effects on Christians

Before you can overcome porn addiction, it’s important to understand it. Porn addiction is a physiological and psychological dependence on pornography. Over time, the brain becomes desensitized to the images, and the user requires more explicit content to achieve the same level of stimulation. This can lead to a host of negative consequences, including decreased libido, relationship problems, and even depression or anxiety.

If you want to conquer pornography in 2023, don’t rely on a resolution that you make at the start of the New Year. New Year’s resolutions don’t work. Studies show that the success rate among those who make New Year’s resolutions is low. For one thing, many resolutions are too lofty and unrealistic, leading to disappointment and frustration. But the main reason to avoid making a New Year’s resolution to quit porn is that old sins are difficult to break. Resolutions focus on short-term goals, rather than long-term success. Here’s what to do instead.

Have you ever wanted to know God’s will for your life? Have you ever wondered what job you should take, where you should live, who you should marry, what school you should attend? Have you ever had difficulty discerning the Lord’s will? Have you ever found out that it’s a challenge to know, to appreciate, to understand, to get a clear yes or no from the Lord concerning his will for your life? I have good news for you. I’m going to show you God’s will for your life today. This is categorically, unequivocally, 100% God’s known will for your life today.

I sinned sexually, repeatedly, because I lied to myself. I lied so often that I eventually believed my lies.

illustration of a wooden marionette with long nose; liar concept

I viewed porn for the first time when I was 11 years old and for the last time when I was 61. That’s 50 years of sinning against God, 30 of them as a Christian. I sinned repeatedly because I lied to myself. I lied so often that I eventually believed my lies. But that all changed on November 4, 2021, when I purposed before God to never look at anything wicked ever again, and to never masturbate ever again. Here I am, 366 days later, living what I purposed back then. I have a year of victory under my belt (excuse the metaphor) partly because I no longer believe those lies I told myself. Here they are. See if you tell any of them to yourself.

    Lie #1: God Doesn’t See
When I view pornographic images and videos, I tell myself that God doesn’t see. I sin in secret. But God does see.

    Lie #2: It’s Not Adultery
Jesus says that I commit adultery when I look at a woman to lust after her. But I lie to myself. “I don’t commit adultery unless I do the physical act,” I assure myself. But I am

Who will deliver you from your body of death? God will. Who will deliver you from your sexual sin? God will.

Illustration of surreal painting of sky, think outside the box concept

Are you like the Apostle Paul? Do you ever cry out, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” Do you find that the things you want to do, you don’t do? And that the things you shouldn’t do, you do? Can you say along with Paul, “For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice?” (Romans 7:19). Do you wonder who will deliver you?

Then Paul has good news for you. Or, rather, God has good news for you, communicated through His servant, Paul, in the letter that Paul wrote to the church in Rome. In chapter seven you see Paul’s predicament and yours laid out. With your mind you serve the law of God, but with your flesh you serve the law of sin. You have God’s Spirit, and you want to follow His leading. But you also have your sinful flesh, and you want to follow it, too.

This is why you have such conflict with pornography as a Christian man. Men in the world who consume pornography don’t struggle. They enjoy their sin. But you, i

There are two mistakes you can make as a Christian man wanting to break free of pornography. There might be more than two mistakes, actually. But there are two big ones that you must avoid.

The first mistake is thinking that your sexual purity is entirely up to you. You believe you are responsible for your sin, and therefore you are responsible for forsaking it. So far, so good. But you also think your victory is up to you. You must read your Bible more. You must pray more often and more fervently. You must mortify your flesh more thoroughly. In other words, you think conquering sexual lust is all up to you. This is a mistake.

The second blunder is to think that your victory over porn is entirely up to God. You believe that you are “powerless over your addic

I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. One of the reasons I left Celebrate Recovery is that I never faced consequences for my sexual sin. Brothers like me, caught up in the sin of habitual porn use, would attend the meetings week after week, being pure one week, falling into sin the next, but nothing ever happened. Actually, something happened. We received a “First Time Attender” blue chip each time we reset our sobriety clock to one day of sobriety. This was not the biblical model for dealing with a brother who was living in sexual sin, so I left.

What I never heard at Celebrate Recovery meetings were those simple words of Jesus: “Sin no more.” Jesus said them to the woman caught in adultery (John 8:11), and he said them to the ma

The remedy for habitual porn use is not external, but internal. The cure is not secular, but spiritual.

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.

If you are a Christian man who struggles with looking at pornography, don’t try to find a label for your sin. Don’t look for a diagnostic label that requires medication, therapy, counselling, weekly attendance at recovery meetings, working your way through 12 steps, or a

God has a crown prepared for you. It’s in your size. To receive it you must do something by not doing something.

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

    James 1:12

I don’t suppose you think often about the positive side of sexual temptation. For example, when you are in the midst of a struggle with lust, or when you are battling against the temptation to look at porn or to masturbate, I don’t imagine that you think about any rewards that could possibly come with those struggles. I know that I never did.

But the Apostle James tells us that there is a blessing attached to temptation. There is good that comes out of sexual temptation. That blessing comes directly from the hand of God. The man who is tempted sexually will receive a blessing from God. He will receive the crown of life. There’s just one condition.

If I am still tempted by porn, then I must still desire it, at some level, to some degree. If I didn’t desire it, it couldn’t tempt me.

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

    James 1:14

One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn about pornography is that I am tempted by it because I desire it. Yes, I call porn wicked. I say I hate it. I say I want to be free of it. But the fact remains that I am tempted by pornography still. And I am tempted by it because I desire it.

I am telling you this because this knowledge is part of your path to freedom. Your enemy isn’t only outward. Your enemy isn’t just pornographic websites or immodest women or Instagram or TikTok. Your principal enemy is lust. Your lust. Your enemy is internal.

James tells you and me that “each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.” For you and me to be drawn away by something, we must first

Nine months ago, I had no experience with lasting victory over sexual temptation. That has changed, and I’ve learned a vital, encouraging lesson.

The Good News about Sexual Temptation | Luke 4:13

And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

    Luke 4:13

Sexual temptation seems unbearable when you are in the midst of it. Or perhaps I should speak for myself. Sexual temptation seems unbearable when I am in the midst of it. That is my “lived experience,” as they say these days. But I know something today about temptation that I didn’t know and that I couldn’t have believed nine months ago—it doesn’t last.

That’s right. The temptation to look at pornography, the temptation to masturbate, no matter how strong, eventually goes away. It doesn’t last. The good news about Jesus being tempted in the wilderness for 40 days, if I may put it this way, is that it lasted only 40 days. Jesus got the victory over the devil, and then the devil departed from Him. That’s the good news of temptation—it only lasts for a season.

Nine months ago, I had no experien

The remedy for watching pornography isn’t to tweak, or adjust or clean up your carnal mind so that it obeys God—because it can’t.

Porn Makes You an Enemy of God | Romans 8:7

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

    Romans 8:7

Are you an enemy of God? Maybe. If you watch pornography habitually, compulsively, then your mind is “enmity against God.” Your mind is hostile to God, alienated from God, in opposition to God. That makes you His enemy. This is the clear teaching of scripture (Romans 8:7).

The carnal mind is the fleshly mind, the mind that is fallen and acts contrary to God’s law. The carnal mind is weak and still subject to the attack of sin, is opposed to the Spirit and wars against it, and becomes the instrument of sin. When you indulge in sexual immorality by indulging in pornography and masturbation, you indulge your carnal mind. You give it what it wants, and you refuse to subject yourself to the law of God, which speaks against sexual immorality from Genesis to Revelation.

    Paul is

The sexually immoral are going to have their portion in the lake of fire. That’s a high price to pay in eternity for watching porn in this lifetime.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

    Romans 8:6

One of the greatest problems with pornography is its price. A large portion of the porn that men consume today is free. You can watch hours of it every day without paying a dime. But you have to pay for it all the same, one day.

The Bible says, “to be carnally minded is death.” When you look at porn, you are carnally minded. When you are carnally minded, you set your feet on a path that leads to spiritual death, in the lake of fire.

“Carnal” is a word you don’t hear these days. It means “fleshly,” as in, the lust of the flesh. The flesh is that part of the human condition that is weak and still subject to the attack of sin, that is opposed to the Spirit and wars against it, and that becomes the instrument of sin. Your flesh, by definition, is displeasing to God. Any thought or action you have that

What inconvenience or daily annoyance are you facing to avoid pornography, to avoid sexual temptation, to walk a holy walk?

exual Purity Is Annoying, Inconvenient, Costly and Awesome | Matthew 18:8

If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire.

    Matthew 18:8

If you want to be free of pornography, you must pay the price. Sexual purity doesn’t come cheap. Freedom from sexual sin can’t be purchased with church attendance or a 12-step recovery program. If you want to be free of the grip of porn and masturbation, you have to pay, and pay dearly.

Sanctification is costly. That’s what Jesus teaches. If your hand or foot causes you to sin, you cut it off and cast it from you. That’s the high price you must pay to avoid sinning. You must be willing to go through life with just one hand or just one foot in order to avoid sin and to please your Lord.

Jesus is speaking in hyperbole (extravagant exaggeration), of course, to drive home His po

If you want to get victory over pornography, you must discover and deal with your triggers. You likely have dozens.

When Did You Pluck Out Your Eye? | Matthew 5:29

If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

    Matthew 5:29

When is the last time you plucked out your right eye and cast it away from you? I am not being sarcastic. I am asking you in earnest because this principle is one of the keys to conquering pornography, lust, sexual temptation and sexual immorality in your life. The path to sexual purity requires knowing and conquering your triggers.

When Jesus said, “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you,” He was speaking in the context of adultery. He had just said, “whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Then he gave the remedy. If your right eye causes you to sin by lusting after women, then pluck it out and cast it away from you.

Sexual temptation involves a battle with your body as much as a battle with your will. To avoid porn, avoid the second look.

Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you.

    Proverbs 4:25

As a man, you are tempted sexually primarily by your eyes. The sight of a seductive woman is what inflames your lust. The female form is what causes your blood to rise. This is why, if you want to conquer a compulsive habit of looking at porn, you must conquer the second look.

You know what I am talking about. You are walking down the street, minding your own business, when a young, female jogger appears before you, headed in your direction. As she approaches, you look away, but as she passes, you turn about, your eyes following her. That’s the second look.

You are riding the subway, and you spot an advertisement featuring an immodestly dressed woman. You look away. Then you look back again.

God hates pornography. God hates sexual immorality. Just look at what God did to the Canaanites so see how much he hates sexual sin.

Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.

    Leviticus 18:24-25

If you want to understand God’s opinion of pornography, just open your Bible and see what God commanded the children of Israel to do with the nations that were in the Promised Land. These wicked nations practiced incest, homosexuality, child sacrifice, bestiality and more (Leviticus 18:6-23). God commanded Joshua and his armies to destroy these nations, man, woman and child. Joshua and his men obeyed. “They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword” (Joshua 6:21).

Why did God destroy the Canaanites? Because God chose the nation of Israel to be a witness to the world of the true and living God. God commanded the

When you start a marathon, you can’t see the finish line. But it’s there. You’ll reach it if you run with endurance.

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.

    Hebrews 12:1

If conquering pornography was as easy as sprinting 100 metres, you would have victory by now. Most able-bodied men can sprint for 100 metres (or 100 yards). Some are faster, some are slower, but just about every man can run that distance quickly. A marathon, on the other hand, is a race that most men cannot run. We’re talking 42 kilometers (26 miles), a distance that the majority of men can’t run without training and self-discipline.

Conquering pornography, lust, and sexual immorality is no different. Quitting for a day is easy. Quitting for 42 days in a row is harder. Quitting for a lifetime is harder still. This is partly what Paul has in mind when he tells you and me to lay aside the sin which so easily ensnares u

When you walk according to the lusts of your flesh by looking at porn, you voluntarily follow the Devil’s leading. Just don’t blame him for your walk.

The Devil Made Me Do It? Not. | Ephesians 2: 1-3

Do you deny that you love the world or the things in the world, yet keenly follow one of the things in the world, namely, the lust of the flesh, through porn?

Do You Love Pornography? | 1 John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

    1 John 2:15-17

You cannot love porn and love God. Sexual immorality and God are so opposed that you cannot love them both at once. So, the question is, do you love porn? That is, are you fond of it? Do you desire it? Do you long for it? Does it give you tremendous pleasure?

If you are like most Christian men, you deny that you love porn. You also likely deny that you love the world and the things in the world. Porn isn’t something you renounce as much as something you replace. The path to sexual purity is substitution, not just elimination.

Quit Porn Through Substitution, Not Just Elimination | Romans 6:19

I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

    Romans 6:19

You don’t quit porn. You replace it. You don’t conquer it and walk away in victory. You subdue it by replacing it with something else. You don’t stop watching porn. You start watching something better.

I am overstating my case of course, but only to make a point. Of course you are to quit pornography, subdue it and stop looking at it. But the way you abstain from porn is through substitution, not just through elimination. This is Paul’s point here in his letter to the men and women at Rome. “You used to offer parts of your body as slaves to uncleanness,” he tells them. “Now, offer parts of your body as slaves of righteousness for holiness instead.”

Eight months have passed since I looked at porn. I have learned a few lessons along the way.

I looked at porn for the last time on November 4, 2021. I remember the day because that’s the day I started this daily devotional. That’s the day I got serious about forsaking my sin and never going back. Eight months have passed since then, and I have learned a few lessons along the way.

    1. Writing these daily devotionals is a great motivator: I wish I was motivated by a more spiritual ambition, but simply writing this devotional each day gives me a tremendous incentive to not look at porn. I figure I will lose all moral authority if I commit the very act I write against seven days a week, and that fear keeps me motivated to not look.
    2. Porn will find a substitute: Once I stopped looking at immoral images and videos, I noticed that I still had a hankering for titillation and excitement, so I turned to action movies and crime dramas. I eventually realized what I was doing, and also realized that these movies weren’t edifying or helping me become Christlike. I noticed that, just because I have swept the house clean

Pornography is a lust problem. To escape the corruption that it creates, escape the lust that lures you to look.

By which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

    2 Peter 1:4

Lust is something you are to escape. Peter tells you and me that we have escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And this escaping is supposed to be permanent. The word in the Greek is apopheúgō, a combination of two words, “away from” and “flee.” It means to escape through flight, and carries the idea of separation, a full breaking away from the previous situation (Wuest). So, you don’t just run away from lust. You escape, and stay away.

You are to escape lust because lust leads to corruption, that is, to depravity, decay, rottenness, and ruin. And notice where this corruption is found—in the world. Co

No matter how much pornography you consume, there will never be enough to satisfy your lust.

    Hell and Destruction are never full;
So the eyes of man are never satisfied.

    Proverbs 27:20

Kenneth Shipp, 58, of Jonesboro, Georgia, had 447,268 pornographic images and 19,395 pornographic videos in his possession when agents raided his home in 2016. He was found guilty of possessing and distributing pornography, and sentenced to eight years in federal prison.

If you are a Christian man who looks at pornography but longs to quit, you may wonder why or even how any man would accumulate this volume of pornography. After all, just do the math. If you had a stash of porn this large, you could watch one porn video a day for 53 years and still not reach the last video in your collection. If you had a stash of images as large as Mr. Shipp’s, and if you looked at 10 images an hour, eight hours a day, 7 days a week, you would waste 15 years of your life looking at porn and still never reach the end of your collection.

When you are next tempted to watch pornography, whom will you obey? Because you have to obey someone.

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

    Romans 6:16

When it comes to watching pornography, you have a choice. And I’m not talking about the choice to look or to not look, the choice to indulge or to abstain. I’m talking about the choice of whom you obey. Because porn is personal. Behind every pornographic image there’s a camera operator. And behind every camera operator there’s another person.

Paul tells us in his letter to the church in Rome that, “to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey.” If you are like me and countless other Christian men, you have read this verse for years but never taken the time to follow it to its logical conclusion. Let’s do that, shall we?

God promises that the divine power you need to resist porn and masturbation is already yours for the taking. You just have to take it.

Don't Ask God for What He Has Already Given | 2 Peter 1:3

His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.

    2 Peter 1:3

You are guilty of it. I am guilty of it. In the midst of our struggle with sexual sin, we cry out to God, begging Him to give us strength to forsake our sin. We beseech God to give us power to overcome sexual temptation. We pray repeatedly, week in and week out, for God to deliver us from sexual urges. The problem is, He already has. We keep asking God to give us something that He has already given us.

This is the conclusion that you and I must draw from what Peter tells us. After all, if God “has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness,” why do we need to ask Him for anything else that pertains to life and godliness? We don’t. If God has already given to us all the divine power, all the resources, and every other thing we need to live a life that’s free of pornography and free of masturbat

Noah is proof that God knows how to deliver you out of your sexual temptations (and how to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment).

The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment.

    2 Peter 2:9

I don’t suppose you wake up each morning thinking about Noah, but maybe you should. After all, if you have a chronic problem with looking at pornography and masturbating, you do well to remember some lessons from the time of The Flood.

The first lesson is that Noah lived among a generation that Peter in his letter calls “ungodly” (2 Peter 2:5). As far as God was concerned, “the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5). And yet Noah, living among such wicked people and faced with all manner of temptations, found grace in the sight of the Lord.

Another lesson from Noah’s life is that God punished the wicked but delivered Noah and his immediate family. God brought a catastrophic flood upo

If you have a problem with pornography that is compounded by being a hypocrite on the subject, forsake your sexual sin today. You’ll conquer both sins in one act.

Porn Is a Snare Because It's Anonymous

You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery?

    Romans 2:22

Looking at pornography is bad enough. But looking at it but also judging others for doing the same sin is even worse. A sexually immoral Christian is wicked. But a sexually immoral Christian who is also a hypocrite is even more wicked.

You may not have this problem, of course. You may not preach from a pulpit or teach Sunday school or lead a men’s Bible study. Your sin of looking at porn might be a solitary sin, one that you don’t chastise anyone else for committing. But if you are responsible for preaching, teaching, exhorting and instructing, the bar is set higher for you.

As Paul tells former Jews in the church at Rome in his day, when you teach the law while breaking the law, you dishonor God and blaspheme the name of God among the Gentiles. These days, if you watch pornography in private but preach against it in public, you do the

With Covenant Eyes, no matter where I am, no matter what time of day or night it is, if I look at porn, I get caught. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

To Quit Porn, Get Caught | Job 24:15

The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight,
    Saying, ‘No eye will see me’;
    And he disguises his face.

    Job 24:15

If you want to quit pornography, get caught. If you want to put sexual immorality behind you, use every creative tool and method and tactic at your disposal to make your sin known. The cure for habitual porn use is exposure.

The adulterer, after all, as Job observes, waits for twilight before leaving the house to have sex with another man’s wife. He disguises his face, and assures himself that no one will see him. That’s the nature of sexual sin—it thrives in darkness. It demands secrecy and deceit.

If you struggle with pornography, part of your challenge is that watching it in secret is so easy. You can get filthy images and videos on any mobile electronic device, whether laptop, tablet or phone, and you can carry these to any secluded place you want. Engaging in adul

Looking at porn makes you an adulterer, a liar, and more. One sin leads to another. But the opposite is also true. Quit porn and you can’t help but quit other sins as well. Bonus, right?

Also I have seen a horrible thing in the prophets of Jerusalem:
    They commit adultery and walk in lies;
They also strengthen the hands of evildoers,
So that no one turns back from his wickedness.
All of them are like Sodom to Me,
    And her inhabitants like Gomorrah.

    Jeremiah 23:14

When you look at porn you break three of the 10 Commandments. You commit adultery. You covet your neighbor’s wife. And you lie. That’s the nature of sexual sin—it never acts alone. If you watch pornography habitually, you are guilty of plenty of other sins as well. One sin can’t help but lead to another.

This was true in Jeremiah’s day. The prophets of Jerusalem committed adultery and walked in lies. They covered their sexual sin by lying about it. They either lied by commission, by telling their wives falsehoods about where they were or who they were with, for example. Or they lied by omission, by failing to confess their sins, a

When you continue in sexual sin during the week that grace may abound on Sunday, you make Christ the minister of sin.

Porn During the Week But Prayer on Sunday Doesn't Work | Jeremiah 7:9-10

Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know, and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations’?

    Jeremiah 7:9-10

No amount of church attendance or profession of faith will profit you if you refuse to repent of watching porn. No amount of religious observance or good works will benefit you if you refuse to amend your ways. This is the message that the prophet had for the people of Israel in his day, and it’s the message that he has for you and me today when it comes to sexual sin.

The words that Jeremiah speaks here are the words that God gave the prophet to speak. These are the words that God commanded Jeremiah to proclaim. They are phrased in the form of a rhetorical question, that is, a question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than to get an an

What if you continue watching porn compulsively, habitually until the day you die, or until the day that the Lord Jesus returns? A fate worse than stoning awaits you.

Would Stoning Dissuade You? | Leviticus 20:10

The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death.

    Leviticus 20:10

If the penalty for looking at pornography was stoning, would you still be “addicted?” This isn’t an academic exercise because there was a time when the divine penalty for multiple sexual sins was death. In those days, you didn’t sit in a circle with a bunch of other men to discuss your sexual addiction. Instead, a circle of people formed around you and threw stones at you until you were dead.

I am referring, of course, to what is known as the Mosaic Law, that is, the law handed down to Moses by God. You discover this law in the books of Exodus and Leviticus. In Leviticus 20:10-15, in particular, you read the record of what God commands Moses to tell the children of Israel concerning various sexual acts. These include adultery, incest, homosexua

God has delivered you from your house of sin and bondage. Now he wants you to never go back. And He’s put that in writing.

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage . . . You shall not commit adultery.

    Exodus 20:2,14

If you want to conquer pornography, you need to get your motivation from the right source. After all, you can find all manner of reasons to quit. You can quit to save your marriage, quit to avoid scandal, quit to avoid jail time. Or you can quit because of who God is and of what He has done for you.

Consider the 10 Commandments, for example. Moses received them directly from the hand of God, live and in person. God gave the commandments to Moses one by one, and then God inscribed them on tablets of stone. But before God handed down His 10 commandments, He prefaced his remarks by reminding Moses of who He is and of what He had done.

Watching pornography isn’t a victimless crime. Each time you look at a woman to lust after her, you sin against four people. One way to quit porn is to appreciate that your sin harms others. Your sexual immorality involves more than just you.

To Defeat Porn, Discover Your Who, What, Why, Where, When and How

When journalists want to get to the bottom of a news story, they ask the Five Ws and the One H. They ask about the Who, What, Why, Where, When and How. If you want to conquer sexual temptation, particularly the temptation to look at pornography or to masturbate, you must uncover the Five Ws and the One H of your sexual temptation. To defeat sexual sin, you must understand yourself. And that means discovering your six types of triggers.

Who Triggers You to Sin Sexually?

Let’s start with the Who of sexual temptation. Who tempts you to commit sexual sin? Who do you lust after? Who lusts after you?

As you read your Bible, you discover that men have been tempted to sin sexually for centuries. Most of them were tempted to sin with a particular woman. Job was tempted to lust after

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.”
    1 Thessalonians 4:3

    Questions

    1. How do you define “the will of God,” generally speaking?

    3. What is sanctification?
    4. Who does this verse apply to?

    1. The “will of God” in this instance refers to God’s decretive will, that is, the will of God that pertains to His decrees. If God decrees something, He commands it. If God commands something, God wills, or desires, that thing to happen. God’s will is what God wants to happen.

Part of the reason you are drawn back to your habitual sin is not your fault. If pornography was only available in public, you would be sexually pure.

If you have been struggling with pornography for anywhere close to as long as I did as a Christian man (30 years), the primary cause of your habitual sin is readily explained—you haven’t been caught. Pornography is powerful precisely because it’s private. It’s the sin you do in secret that no one knows about. Not your spouse. Not your kids. Not your work colleagues. Not your brothers in the Lord. Not your church leaders. You are ensnared in porn because it’s anonymous.</

Porn’s affordability is partly why you are in the trouble you are in. If it was crazy difficult to get hold of and impossibly expensive to acquire, you would be free.

There was a time when pornography was avoidable because it was unaffordable. Christian men like you and me had an easier time staying sexually pure because every form of pornography on the market, whether the open market or the black market, cost something. This made the battle for purity a lot easier because men never got snared by something they couldn’t afford.

The economics of porn in those days was simple: the harder the porn, the higher the price. So

Paul is not concerned about finding sexual sin in the church as much as he is afraid of finding believers who haven’t repented of their sexual sin.

To Quit Porn, Change Your Life | 2 Corinthians 12:20-21

“For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults; lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness which they have practiced.”

“Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”
    Genesis 19:17

God’s advice for the Christian man who watches pornography can be summed up in one word—escape! God will have mercy on you just as He had mercy on Lot, but only if you obey God, escape the wicked city, don’t look back, and go to live somewhere safe.

Lot was a righteous man who lived with his wife and family in Sodom, a city so wicked that the Bible uses the name of the city as a symbol of wickedness. Its destruction at the hands of the Lord is held up as a warning to sinners of coming judgment (Jude 7). God had mercy on Lot and his family by giving them a chance to leave the city before it was consumed from heaven with fire and brimstone.

Eight Lessons I've Learned After Six Months Porn Free

I looked at pornography as a Christian for 30 years. In all that time, I knew that my sin was wicked, and that God hated it. I wanted to quit. I tried to quit, multiple times, and in multiple ways. And I did achieve sexual purity for a season. But I never lasted for long. That all changed when my 30th anniversary as a Christian arrived. I finally realized how ridiculous it all was, me still struggling with a besetting sin after 30 years for crying out loud. So, I got serious, and made some drastic changes in my life to quit porn.

Today marks my six-month anniversary of not looking at pornography and not doing the physical act that usually follows it. I have learned a few lessons on this journey, so here they are.

    1. Sexual Purity is Possible: I can last six months without looking at pornography and not die. I can go six months without touching myself and the

They are found in a daily email report that I receive from Covenant Eyes, the company I use to block porn and hold me accountable online.

The Covenant Eyes app, installed on my desktop, laptop and tablet (and smartphone, if I still had one), keeps me accountable by taking screenshots of where I go and what I do on my devices. Covenant Eyes uses artificial intelligence to detect explicit content. When it catches me looking at pornography or nudity, it takes a screenshot and sends it to my accountability partner. The AI catches explicit content on websites, in apps, in downloaded images and videos, and in DVDs. Basically, if porn appears on my screen, Covenant Eyes knows about it, and tells on me. The Bible warns that you can fall away in unbelief and become severed from your saving union with God through Christ. Heed the warnings. Don’t believe the lie.

“Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die.'”
    Genesis 3:4

If you are a Christian man struggling to conquer your habitual sin of watching pornography, your problem may be that you believe the same lie that Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden. The lie that Eve believed. The lie that she and Adam acted upon. The lie that brought death—physical and spiritual—upon them and all mankind.

Satan whispers this same lie to you whenever you are tempted to look at pornography or masturbate. You know that these sins are wrong, but Satan tells you otherwise.

I eventually got 24 hours of freedom from porn and masturbation. That turned into a week. Then a month. Then multiple months. You can, too.

I looked at pornography for the first time at age 11 and for the last time at age 61. November 2021 is when I got serious about kicking my filthy habit and forsaking my wicked sin. Gaining victory in this area of my life required 10 painful steps. Your results may vary, but if you take these 10 steps you may gain victory as well. Here they are.

    1. I confessed my sin to my wife and begged for her forgiveness. I admitted to her that my repeated viewing of porn was repeated adultery against her.
    2. I got rid of all outright pornography and everything even borderline inappropriate from my office and home, including anything found on my PC, laptop and other electronic devices.
    3. I installed porn-blocking and accountability software (Covenant Eyes) on all my electronic devices: work desktop, work laptop, tablet, phone. It takes screenshots of my activity and emails them to my accountability partner daily.

On the day before he died by execution in the electric chair, serial killer Ted Bundy shared his thoughts on pornography. He shared them with James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family. Bundy had spent almost 15 of the preceding years in prison with inmates guilty of similar crimes. He had spent a lot of time thinking about why he was where he was in life. Here’s what he told Dobson:

“I’ve lived in prison for a long time now, and I’ve met a lot of men who were motivated to commit violence. Without exception, every one of them was deeply involved in pornography, deeply consumed by the addiction. The F.B.I.’s own study on serial homicide shows that the most common interest among serial killers is pornography.”

A man who looks at pornography habitually is, by definition, living according to the flesh. Unless he forsakes his sin, He will die and be separated from God for all eternity.

Watch Porn Habitually, Die Spiritually | Romans 8:13

“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
    Romans 8:13

Do you treat forgiveness as a pre-paid credit card? Do you sin sexually, repeatedly and habitually because you believe your sins—past, present, future—are all forgiven, no matter what, guaranteed? Do you look at pornography and masturbate, week in, week out, knowing that on every occasion you can always rely on God for His forgiveness because God is obligated to forgive you?

If you look at pornography and masturbate but want to stop, your inability to conquer your sin might just be tied to your misunderstanding of eternal security. If you believe you are “once saved, always saved” and that you can never fall away, you need to read your New Testament. Every writer in the New Testament warns believers about falling away. When commissioning the 12 disciples, Christ warns them five times about falling away.

When you view pornography, you support human traffickers. You support the kind of evil men that Solomon warns you about.

You, Friend of Sex Traffickers | Proverbs 2:10-15

“When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things, from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness; who rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of the wicked; whose ways are crooked, and who are devious in their paths.”
    Proverbs 2:10-15

Forty-nine percent of women who have worked as prostitutes report being filmed by their traffickers or customers. This video footage is often streamed or later distributed without their knowledge or consent. This means you have no way of knowing if the women in the porn you watch are willing participants. In many cases, they are not.

Perform the positive actions that God commands, and you’ll have a positive day today, free of sexual sin.

Sexual Purity Is a List of Do's, Not Don'ts

If you are a Christian man who has been struggling to overcome pornography or masturbation for some time, you may feel that the only path to victory is a life of self-denial. You may feel that the weight of scripture on this topic is a long list of “Thou shalt nots.” But the opposite is the case, particularly in the New Testament. The path to sexual purity is a list of things you are to do. Victory over sexual sin comes through what you do, not simply what you don’t do. Here are the top-10 actions you are commanded to take to live a life of sexual purity.

    1. Make a covenant with your eyes not to look upon attractive women (Job 31:1)
    2. Gouge out your right eye if it causes you to commit adultery, and throw it away (Matthew 5:29)
    3. Flee sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18)
    4. Put lust to death (<a href="ht

The biblical remedy for porn, masturbation and sexual immorality isn’t complicated. It can be summed up in one word.

Want to Quit Porn and Masturbation. Say "No." | Titus 2:11-12

“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”
    Titus 2:11-12 NIV

Want to know the secret to quitting porn? Quit porn. Want to know the secret to not masturbating? Don’t masturbate. I realize that this sounds like simplistic advice, because it is. The guaranteed way to quit sexual immorality is to quit sexual immorality. That’s what the Bible says.

How do you quit porn? Say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions. How do you quit masturbation? Say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions. That’s the formula, that’s the proven method, that’s the biblical remedy. It’s not complicated.

Celebrate Recovery, Sexaholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs complicate this issue of forsaking sexual sin. <a href="https://www.celebraterecovery.co

Sexual purity comes when you change what you believe. Or, rather, when you change who you believe.

Sexual Sin Starts Between Your Ears

“And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him.”
    John 13:2

Your battle for sexual purity takes place in your mind. You may think that pornographic websites are the enemy, or that immodestly dressed women are the problem. You may even think you are an addict. But if you watch pornography habitually, if you masturbate compulsively, but long to quit, you must first realize that you don’t have a sexual problem—you have a thinking problem.

Your enemy is the devil. And the battleground is your mind. The devil puts thoughts and desires and beliefs into your mind, just as he did with Judas. Judas probably thought that betraying Jesus was his idea. But where did that idea come from in the first place? From the devil. The devil put the thought of betrayal into the heart of Judas.

In the Bible, the heart refers to

If your phone causes you to sin by helping you look at porn, trade it in for a model that can’t access the internet. You’ll avoid fire in this life, and fire in the life to come.

Viewing Porn on Your Phone? Expect to Get Burned. | Proverbs 6:27-29

“Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be seared? So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; whoever touches her shall not be innocent.”
    Proverbs 6:27-29

Alaska Airlines flight 751 from New Orleans to Seattle was at cruise altitude when a passenger’s Samsung Galaxy A21 phone overheated and began sparking. The flight crew used fire extinguishers to quench the flames. The pilot diverted immediately to the nearest airport. And the passengers and crew evacuated the aircraft on slides because the interior of the cabin was hazy from smoke.

Wouldn’t it be handy if your phone caught fire every time you looked at porn on the device? That would be a guaranteed deterrent, wouldn’t it, a sparking, smoldering, overheating hunk of metal and plastic in your hand whenever you viewed pornographic images and videos? But that’s the problem with porn. You can view it freely and anonym

Jesus commands us to remove all sources of sexual temptation from our lives. And not just for a day. Not just for Lent. But immediately, permanently. Pluck them out, cast them away. Never look back. That’s the path to victory.

To Quit Porn, Quit Social Media | Matthew 5:29-30

“If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”
    Matthew 5:29-30

Do any social media platforms cause you to look at women to lust after them (as Jesus forbids)? Do they cause you to commit adultery in your heart? In short, do any social platforms cause you to sin? Then you must pluck them out and throw them away. This is what Jesus demands of you.

In practical terms, this means deleting your social media accounts. Not pausing them. Not uninstalling the apps from your phone but keeping the accounts active. To pluck out your eye and to cast it away you must delete, cancel, terminate and close all social accounts that cause you to sin. And if you find yourself drawn back to these social platforms even though you no longer have an account, you must block them. Install a porn-blocker on every electronic device you

Short of throwing all of my electronic devices into a dumpster, the only proven way I know of to not go near the online door of pornography is porn-blocking & accountability software. It protects me from the immoral woman. And it protects me from another sexually immoral person I know—me.

To Quit Porn, Avoid Her Door | Proverbs 5:8

“Do not go near the door of her house.”
    Proverbs 5:8

The primary problem with pornography is proximity. Porn is easy to view because it’s easy to find. It’s always just a few clicks or swipes away, often free of charge. This wasn’t always the case. When I was a teen, the only way to get your hands on hardcore porn was to meet a man in a dark alley off Times Square or to visit a bookstore in Amsterdam. Today, hardcore pornography is right in your pocket. If you want to conquer your habitual sin of looking at porn, you must solve your proximity problem.

This is the advice that Solomon has for his son. To avoid the immoral woman, says Solomon, “do not go near the door of her house.” That is, to avoid the seductress, the woman whose steps lead you down to death and hell, don’t go near the door of her house. The house of the immoral woman, of course, is where she practices her trade. It’s where you find the bedroom and the bed where she and her clients

I waited 30 years to discover a strong enough motivation to quit porn. Please don’t follow my example.

To Quit Porn, Find Your Big Why | 1 Kings 18:21

And Elijah came to all the people, and said, ‘How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.’”
    1 Kings 18:21

If you want to quit pornography and masturbation, discover your Big Why. Find your reason, your motivation, your incentive for quitting sexual immorality once and for all. Just make sure it’s a big enough reason. Without a solid motivation for quitting, you are likely to return again and again to your sexual sin. I speak from experience.

I looked at pornography for the first time in 1971 and for the last time in the winter of 2021. I know the month and I know the year because 2021 marked my 30th anniversary as a Christian. I was converted in the summer of 1991 after a miraculous series of events that proved the reality of God’s working in my life. That July I repented of my sins, trusted Christ as my Savior, and asked God to forgive me based on the sacrifice, burial and resurrecti

If you persist in your use of pornography as a Christian man, expect pain today, and the Lake of Fire eventually. Sexual sin is progressive.

“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
    Revelation 21:8

If you persist in your use of pornography as a Christian man, expect increasing pain, because sexual sin is progressive. It grows more wicked over time. As you continue to indulge your sinful flesh, your flesh requires stronger and ever-more wicked forms of pornography to get the same dopamine buzz. As you head deeper and deeper into your sin, the consequences of your sexual immorality build. Here are 50 repercussions you should expect over time if you are a married Christian man with children, and if you refuse to forsake your habitual use of pornography.

When you enjoy porn, you make yourself a friend of pornographers and sex traffickers. And with friends like them, who needs enemies?

You the Porn User, Enemy of God | James 4:4

“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
    James 4:4

I don’t suppose you woke up this morning with the express aim of making yourself an enemy of God. You are a Christian, after all. And Christians are supposed to love God with all their heart, and with all their soul, and with all their strength and with all their mind (Luke 10:37). If anyone is an enemy of God, surely it’s not you, right? Wrong.

James tells us that friendship with the world is enmity with God. That is, affection for, fondness of, and love for the world is hostility towards, alienation from and opposition to God. When James refers to “the world,” he doesn’t mean the physical world, such as mountains, lakes and trees. And he doesn’t mean the people of the world. He means the world in a moral sense. He means the spirit that is opposed to God.

Never think that sinning sexually even once is OK and nothing to worry about. Block the online false teachers who tell you otherwise. Your soul depends upon it.

    Don't Call Your Sin a Relapse | 2 Peter 2:13b-1

“They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children.”
    2 Peter 2:13-14

When is the last time you had a conversation with a false teacher about porn and masturbation? More recently than you might think, most likely. If you are one of those Christian men who turns to Quora, Reddit and other online communities for support for your habitual sexual sin, you have likely run into a false teacher or two, and likely without even knowing it.

False teachers have eyes full of adultery, and they entice unstable souls by downplaying the gravity of sexual sin. They never call pornography and masturbation sexual immorality, or wicked, or sinful. They call them compulsive behaviors. They call sexual sin acting out. They call it a struggle. Your job is to spot false teachers before they snatch away your sexual purity and wreck your testimony—and life.

“For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error.”
    2 Peter 2:18 NKJV

There’s only one thing worse than feeling shame for your sexual sin. Feeling no shame. If you are trying to conquer pornography or masturbation, be careful where you go for advice. If you post a question on Reddit or Quora, for example, watch out for the un-biblical answers you quickly receive from some professing Christians on these and other online forums and discussion boards. Because one of the goals of false teachers is to lure you back to the very sexual sins you are trying to escape.

This is the warning that the apostle Peter has for you when he tells you that false teachers allure through lewdness. Lewdness is a word you don’t he

You have engaged in enough unrestrained sexual immorality and shameless use of pornography. Those are things that the lost like to do. Time’s up for you.

“For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.”
    1 Peter 4:3

God has put a time limit on your use of pornography and masturbation. If you are still watching porn and pleasuring yourself after all these years, you should know that you are well into overtime. The game could end any minute now. You are outstaying your welcome, and trying to outlast God’s patience.

Peter looked at his life as being divided into two periods: life before Christ, and life after Christ. Pre-conversion and post-conversion. Life in the dark, and life in the light. His time before Christ was the period of his life when he did what lost Gentiles desire to do. He walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. But then He met Christ. Or, rather, Christ met him. Peter’s life was differ

To arm yourself with the mind of Christ means to be ready to suffer for Him. But there is an awesome payoff.

To Conquer Porn, Change Your Mind | 1 Peter 4:1-2

Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.”
    1 Peter 4:1-2

Your primary weapon in your war against sexual sin isn’t filtering software, an accountability partner, a 12-step recovery program, an online forum or a therapist. Your primary weapon is your mind, a mind conformed to the mind of Christ. When you think as Christ thought during His earthly ministry, you stop sinning.

You are to arm yourself with the mind of Christ. That is, you and I are to view sin the way Christ viewed sin. We are to respond to temptation the way Christ responded to it. Christ was tempted in all points as we are, yet He never sinned (Hebrews 4:15). When we arm ourselves with the mind of Christ, we do the same.

What you run from, and what you run towards, has eternal consequences for your soul.

Are You Running in the Right Direction? | Hebrews 12:14-17

“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.”
    Hebrews 12:14-17

If you want to conquer pornography and masturbation, run in the right direction. What you run from, and what you run towards, has eternal consequences for your soul. Those who flee fornication avoid sexual immorality. Those who don’t, don’t. Those who pursue holiness see God. Those who don’t, don’t.

What would you do if God made your sexual sin an object lesson about how NOT to live the Christian life?

“Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.”

Would your church kick you out if it discovered your sexual sin? Why not assume that they would? Then act accordingly.

Is Your Church Mourning Your Sexual Sin? | 1 Corinthians 5:1

Don’t expect to live a life of sexual purity with worship alone, or willpower alone. You need both.

To Conquer Sexual Sin, You Need Christ and Crucifixion (Yours) | Romans 13:14

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”
    Romans 13:14

The cure for habitual sexual sin is Christ and crucifixion. Christ as the primary object of your affection. And your own crucifixion of your flesh. You need both to gain victory over pornography and masturbation: adoration and action, worship and willpower, the Savior and self-denial.

This is what the Apostle Paul means when he says you must “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” You used to walk in lewdness and lust (Romans 13:13). Now you are to walk properly, decently. And that requires both adopting something new and abandoning something old. It means embracing Christ, and forsaking the flesh.

To “put on” the Lord Jesus Christ means to clothe yourself with Him. It’s the same phrase that appears in the Letter to the

When you masturbate, you take something that your wife alone has authority over (your body) and use it for your own selfish pleasure. You steal.

I know a Christian man who thought that getting married would end his compulsive masturbating. It didn’t. He looked at pornography and masturbated to pornography for the first 20 years of his marriage. Finally, he got so sick of his sin, and of hiding it from his wife, that he confessed all.

He was surprised at his wife’s reaction. “I thought you had lost interest in me, that you no longer found me attractive, and so that was the reason we didn’t make love as often as we used to,” she said. The husband was ashamed, learning that he had not been meeting his wife’s sexual needs. He had thought that his masturbating was a private sin that didn’t hurt his wife. He was wrong.

Habitual masturbation to porn is one symptom of a heart hardened towards God, of a mind that no longer likes to retain a knowledge of God.

Why You Can't Pray and Masturbate at the Same Time | Romans 1:28-29

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers.” Romans 1:28-29

When God gives up on an individual, He gives them over to sexual immorality. Habitual sexual sin is one symptom of a heart hardened towards God, of a mind that no longer likes to retain a knowledge of God. The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18).

If you are a Christian man who habitually masturbates to pornography, and if you desire to quit, reverse-engineer this text to uncover the cause of your bondage—and the remedy. Don’t look to your childhood. Don’t listen to Celebrate Recovery and

The Bible says pornography and masturbation are heart problems for Christian men. Knowing this truth helps you stay sexually pure today.

Porn is a Heart Problem | Matthew 15:19-20

“For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” Matthew 15:19-20

You can’t be tempted by something you don’t desire. Or, to state the case in the positive, you are tempted only by what you desire. I, for example, have no desire to see anyone dead, so I am not tempted to murder. I don’t long for wealth beyond the dreams of avarice, so I am never tempted to buy Powerball lottery tickets. But I do on occasion desire sexual satisfaction from sinful sources, and so I am tempted to look at porn and to masturbate. I wish this wasn’t so, but it is what it is, as they say. I have a heart problem.

In the Bible, the heart refers to the seat of the affections, desires and passions, as well as of wisdom and understanding. Jesus says the heart, my heart, your heart, is where adultery and

You and I both have a good set of brakes where sexual sin is concerned. Have you tested yours recently?

Do Your Brakes Work? | Judges 16:1

“Now Samson went to Gaza and saw a harlot there, and went in to her.” Judges 16:1

When it comes to pornography and sexual temptation, how good are your brakes? Are they in good repair? Are the brake pads worn? Do they stop you quickly enough, and often enough? Do you even use them?

That last question is not rhetorical. After all, Samson was a man consecrated to the Lord. God chose him from birth to lead Israel out of bondage to the Philistines. Samson was a Nazarite, an Israelite consecrated to the service of God. Renowned for his great strength, Samson nevertheless came to a humiliating end. Why? Because he didn’t control his lust.

You see how Samson operated from this historical account of his life. Samson went to Gaza. Saw a prostitute. Went in to have sex with her. No brake. From the moment he saw her to the moment he decided to go in to her, Samson had opportunity to apply the brakes. He could

If your fleshly lusts war against your soul, then that means you are in a battle. And your only job in this battle is to never, ever, surrender.

In Your War with Lust, Never Carry a White Flag | 1 Peter 2:11

“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.” 1 Peter 2:11

If your fleshly lusts war against your soul, as Peter says they do, then that means you are in a battle. And if you are in a battle, then that means you have an enemy. But your enemy isn’t without. It’s within.

In your war against pornography and masturbation, you are at war with yourself, with your fleshly lusts. That is, you are engaged in a daily conflict with inordinate bodily, animal, unregenerate desires. These lusts come in the form of sexual fantasies, sexual temptations, sexual urges. They attack you when you are watching pornography, when you are lying in bed, even when you are sitting in church.

Your job as a soldier in this war is to never surrender to these fleshly lusts. You are commanded to abstain from them. You are to keep away from them as an alcoholic sta

Sexual immorality ranks right up there with kidnapping and murder. Picture yourself among the lawless and ungodly to gain an incentive to quit porn.

Who Else is in Your Cell? | 1 Timothy 1:8-11

“But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.” 1 Timothy 1:8-11

If you watch porn and have sex with yourself in the process, Jesus has a warning for you. Your final destiny hinges on Jesus’ final words.

You, Porn, and the Final Words of Jesus | Revelation 22:14-15

Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.” Revelation 22:14-15 NKJV

You can tell a lot about a person by their last words. On their death beds, the dying reveal what’s important to them. They finally let their guard down, and tell their loved ones some of the things they meant to say while living. After all, final words are just that—the last chance to say something meaningful.

If you want to know what Jesus thinks of pornography and having sex with yourself, simply turn to the last page in your Bible and read Jesus’ final words to you. These are not the last words that Jesus spoke while on earth, but the final words that He spoke to the Apostle John, the “revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave

Sin is always voluntary, never compulsory. No one, and no thing, forces you to look at pornography. You are never a victim. Only a volunteer.

“This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”
    Ephesians 4:17-19 NKJV

In the battle against pornography and sexual immorality, there is no such thing as defeat—only surrender. There is never a time when temptation defeats you, or when sin defeats you, or when the devil defeats you. When you fall to porn or sexual sin, it’s not because you are overpowered. It’s because you surrender.

The remedy for sexual desire in single men and women is marriage. The remedy for sexual desire in married men and women is marriage. Any questions?

“Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.” 1 Corinthians 7:1-2 NKJV

When it comes to sexual immorality, the answer is marriage. Now, what’s your question? This is partly what Paul is saying in his letter to the church at Corinth. They posed a question to him in a letter. And Paul gave his answer to them in a letter that we know as 1 Corinthians.

Their question appears to be about sexual relations for single people, whether that activity is good or bad, permissible or forbidden, in their present circumstances. Paul says that it is good for a single man to not have sexual relations with a woman, assuming he is able to contain his desires. But, if he is unable to contain those desires, he should marry. Marriage is the answer for the single man and the single

There is a proper tool for every job. Use your body as God intends and you will avoid serious injury or death.

To Avoid Injury, Only Use as Directed | 1 Corinthians 6:13b

“Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. “ 1 Corinthians 6:13b

What task is a flathead screwdriver designed for? This is not a trick question. Are you supposed to use a flathead screwdriver as a chisel? No. Or as a prybar? No. Or as a punch? No. So, what are you supposed to use it for? To install and remove flathead screws. That’s the sole purpose that the tool is designed for.

Now, what about your body? What purpose is it designed for? This is not a trick question. Are you supposed to use your body to have sex with prostitutes? No. Or to masturbate to pornography? No. What about using your body to have sex with your girlfriend? No again. The Bible tells you and me that our bodies are not designed for sexual immorality. They are designed for sex with our wives and no one else. Sex is designed to take place between one man and one woman who are married to each other for one lifetime. That’s

You don’t have a destination. You only have your daily walk with the Lord. And that walk involves no sexual immorality today.

Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.” Romans 13:13 ESV

If you want to get victory over habitual sexual sin, such as pornography and masturbation, first realize that you won’t find sexual purity on any map. Sexual purity isn’t a destination you hope to reach tomorrow. It’s a walk you take today.

In Paul’s words, you must “walk properly as in the daytime.” That is, you are to walk honestly (KJV), behave decently (NIV), conduct yourself properly and honorably (Amplified). Your walk is to involve no orgies or drunkenness, no sexual immorality or sensuality, and no quarreling or jealousy. Your walk is to be different from those who live in darkness.

Just don’t expect to arrive at a place in your life where you experience zero sexual lust, zero sexual temptation or zero sexual fantasies. T

Subtracting every source of sexual temptation from your life is worth it. You may start walking with a limp, but it’s worth it.

Struggling to Quit Porn? Where is Your Limp? | Matthew 18:8

“If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire.” Matthew 18:8 NKJV

If your smartphone causes you to sin, should you keep it? No. Smash it to pieces, incinerate what remains, then scatter the ashes. If watching movies on Hulu triggers your lust and causes you to sin, should you keep watching? No. Cancel your subscription. If scrolling through youtube.com causes you to sin, should you keep visiting the site? No. Block it with porn-blocking software.

Getting victory over pornography is an exercise in subtraction. Whenever you discover that something, or someone, or somewhere causes you to sin by looking at porn, listening to porn, or reading porn, you subtract it from your life. And then you take preventive measures so that you never use that thing or meet that person or visit that place again.

Porn is a deep pit that’s easy to fall into but hard to climb out of. But there is a way out. And a way to avoid falling in.

Porn is a Deep Pit | Proverbs 23:26-28

“My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. For a harlot is a deep pit, and a seductress is a narrow well. She also lies in wait as for a victim, and increases the unfaithful among men.” Proverbs 23:26-28

One thing that can be said about sexual sin is that it’s easy to fall into but difficult to climb out of. That’s not an original observation from a sex addiction therapist in the 21st century. It’s a truth that Solomon, renowned for his great wisdom, penned in a proverb to his son.

“A harlot,” warned Solomon, “is a deep pit.” That is, a harlot, a woman who sells her body for sex (a prostitute), is a hole in the ground that’s easy to fall into. Men fall for sex with prostitutes because the sex satisfies their lust but involves zero emotional commitment, zero chance of rejection, and zero responsibility towards the needs of the woman. The sex is simply transactional. As long as a man can afford the f

Jesus demands that you confess your sexual sin and then forsake it. “No condemnation” is always followed by “sin no more.”

If you listen to enough sermons about the woman caught in adultery and her encounter with Jesus, you might think that the only lesson to be learned is that Jesus doesn’t condemn sinners. But you would be only partly right. Which means, of course, that you would also be partly mistaken.

You read about the encounter in John’s gospel, chapter eight.  The scribes and Pharisees bring to Jesus a woman taken in adultery, caught in the very act. They say the woman should be stoned to death. Jesus stoops down and writes something on the ground. He then stands, and says to her accusers, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her” (John 8:7). Those that hear His words are convicted by their conscience, and file out. They leave the woman alone with Jesus. Jesus then stands up and asks the woman, “Where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?” She replies, “No one, Lord.” And then Jesus replies with those immortal lines, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more” (John 8:11).

The longer you view yourself as a porn addict who needs treatment and recovery, the longer you will take to gain lasting victory over your sexual immorality.

Christian Porn Addict is an Oxymoron

If you are a Christian man who uses pornography habitually or compulsively, you are a sinner, a voluntary slave to sin—but not a porn addict. The longer you view yourself as a victim, and the longer you think of yourself as an addict who needs treatment, recovery and hand-holding, the longer you will take to repent of your sin and conquer pornography.

“Christian porn addict” is an oxymoron. The phrase ranks right up there with exact estimate, working vacation, same difference, civil war, genuine imitation, unbiased opinion and government savings plan. If you watch, read or listen to pornography habitually, God calls you an adulterer, a fornicator, void of understanding, deceived, and wicked—but never an addict.

Here are the top reasons you should stop calling yourself a Christian porn addict.

    1. Porn addiction doesn’t exist

If you want to understand how wicked pornography is in the sight of God, just study the words that God uses to describe the sexually immoral.

10 Things God Calls You if You Watch Porn

Are you a porn addict? No. Not according to the Bible, anyway. The world may tell you that you have an addiction, that you have a wound, that you seek intimacy in the wrong places, and that you have a disease called porn addiction. But this is not how God looks at pornography and sexual immorality. If you want to know God’s view of your habitual sexual sin, simply open your Bible to discover what God calls the sexually immoral.

    1. Adulterer

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

    Matthew 5:27

When you watch pornography, you look at a woman to lust after her. Jesus calls that adultery. That makes you an adulterer.

    2. Idolater

Some professing Christians think they can call Jesus Lord, practice sexual sin, and still inherit the kingdom of God. They are deceived. Are you?

Sexually Immoral Christians Are Deceived | 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

If you claim to be a Christian but engage in habitual sexual immorality, you are deceived. If you profess Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, but continue to masturbate to pornography, you are deceived. This might be the primary reason that you are failing to get victory over your sexual immorality. You are deluded about how you can be both a Christian and a habitual fornicator at the same time.

So, what are you deceived about? The Bible tells you. In The First Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians, in the sixth chapter, Paul asks the church at Corinth a simple but searching question:

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were

Sexual immorality is a sin against God. Yes, other people are involved in the transaction, but to get victory over your sexual sin you must gain a correct view of God’s holiness.

To Resist Sexual Sin, Look Up. | Genesis 39:9

If you want to gain lasting victory over pornography and sexual immorality, take your focus off yourself and put it on God. The problem you face is not addiction, but rebellion. The pathway to sexual purity requires you to see your sin more clearly. You need the kind of vision that Joseph had.

Joseph was working as a slave in the house of Potiphar, the captain of the guard of the pharaoh of Egypt. Joseph was head of the household. Potiphar’s wife was soliciting Joseph daily to have sex with her. Finally, Joseph rebuked her:

“There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

    Genesis 39:9

What Potiphar’s wife was proposing was straightforward enough, right? Having sex with her would make Joseph a fornicator, make Potiphar’

Some men refuse to name their sexual sin. They use euphemisms to hide their immorality. But the road to victory begins with naming sin for what it is.

You Can't Conquer it if You Don't Call It | Genesis 39:9

You can tell a lot about a man by what he calls his sin. One man admits to visiting strip joints, while another man says he frequents gentlemen’s clubs. One man says he visits porn sites, while another tells you he views adult entertainment online. One man confesses to watching peep shows, while another man says he follows webcam models.

Some men refuse to name their sexual immorality. They couch their sin in euphemism and abstraction so that it doesn’t sound as bad as it is. But other men refuse to do this. One of them is Joseph. He’s the fellow who was sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers. You read about him in the book of Genesis. Joseph didn’t struggle with sexual sin, but he did have a problem with a married woman who kept inviting him, day by day, to have sex with her. This woman was also the wife of his boss. When she tempted Joseph, this is what he said in reply:

Next time you are tempted to view porn or act out sexually, remember Joseph. See what you are about to do for what it is. And acknowledge who you will be offending if you give in to the sexual temptation. It worked for Joseph.

Sexual Sin or Harmless Diversion? | Genesis 39:9

One of the easy deceptions of pornography is that viewing it is just an activity. Watching an X-rated video on your own, you may be deluded into thinking that your activity is just a harmless way to pass the time and release some stress. But the Bible doesn’t look upon pornography, or masturbating to pornography, or sexual immorality, as innocent activities.

Just consider the life of Joseph. After being sold into slavery and taken down to Egypt, Joseph becomes the overseer in the house of Potiphar, captain of the guard. Joseph is given responsibility for running Potiphar’s household. One day, Potiphar’s wife notices that Joseph is “handsome in form and appearance” (Gen 39:6). She lusts after him, and invites him to go to bed with her. Joseph refuses. This is how he replies:

“There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

Of the 613 commandments in the Old Testament scriptures, sexual immorality made it into the New Testament. Enough said?

If you are a Christian, then you are no longer under law, but under grace, right? The ceremonial laws of the Old Testament do not apply to you, do they? If you are a Gentile believer, then you don’t have to keep the law to be saved, do you?

    Well, almost.

The early church faced these doubts. Some believers who had come to Christ from Judaism were going about telling Gentiles that they had to be circumcised to be saved. They were applying an Old Testament law to New Testament believers. This was causing great confusion and anxiety in the early church. So, a group of apostles and elders in the church came together to settle the matter. This is what they decreed:

“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do wel

There should be not even a hint of sexual immorality in your life. Not a rumor, not a clue, not a trace, not a whiff. Zero evidence.

Walk into the average church and you’ll hear no mention of pornography or sexual immorality. Not from the pulpit. Not in Sunday School. Not in small groups. And that’s as it should be. The New Testament teaches us that sexual immorality and uncleanness should not even be named among Christians. In Ephesians, Paul tells us:

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.”

    Ephesians 5:3 NIV

But the reality in the church is different from what Paul has in mind, isn’t it? Sure, few churches mention pornography or sexual immorality, they don’t even hint at it, but pornography, sex outside or marriage and other forms of sexual immorality are rampant in the church. According to a study conducted by the Barna Group, 64% of Christian men admit to viewing pornogra
