Are you a porn addict? No. Not according to the Bible, anyway. The world may tell you that you have an addiction, that you have a wound, that you seek intimacy in the wrong places, and that you have a disease called porn addiction. But this is not how God looks at pornography and sexual immorality. If you want to know God’s view of your habitual sexual sin, simply open your Bible to discover what God calls the sexually immoral.
1. Adulterer
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Matthew 5:27
When you watch pornography, you look at a woman to lust after her. Jesus calls that adultery. That makes you an adulterer.
2. Idolater
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Ephesians 5:3-7
God equates sexual immorality with idolatry. God says that a sexually immoral person—such as someone who views porn—is an idolator.
3. Deceived
Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10
If you watch pornography compulsively or habitually, and if you think you are still headed for the kingdom of God, God calls you deceived. Pornography is sexual immorality. And the sexually immoral will not inherit the kingdom of God. End of story.
4. Pagan
It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God.
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
When you masturbate to pornography, you engage in passionate lust, exercise zero control over your body, and act just like a pagan, someone who doesn’t know God.
5. Void of understanding
And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: and, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
Proverbs 7:6-23
When you visit places online where you know you will find pornography, where you know you will encounter a woman who will tempt you to sin sexually, you act just like this young man that Solomon spotted in the street. Solomon called him “void of understanding.”
6. Liar
But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
Revelation 21:8
Pornography is a compounding sin. To watch pornography for any length of time undetected requires you to live a lie. You present a face to the world that is false. Your public and private personas do not match. You covet. You commit adultery. And you lie, by what you say and by what you leave unsaid (deleting your internet browsing history, for example, or hedging when explaining to your wife what you were doing on the computer into the wee hours). If you lie about your porn use, that makes you a liar.
7. Wicked
And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not [knows not] what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
Genesis 39:7-9
When Potiphar’s wife invited Joseph to have sex with her, Joseph described the proposed act as a “great wickedness.” He didn’t call it an affair, or a bit on the side, or a workplace fling. Joseph knew that sleeping with Potiphar’s wife would make him someone that God called wicked.
8. Slave to sin
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.
Romans 6:6
If you view pornography compulsively, if sexual immorality is a habit with you, then you are not an addict. You are a slave, and a willing one at that. That means Satan is your master.
9. Ignorant
As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
1 Peter 1:14
Compulsive sexual immorality is the mark of someone who doesn’t know God, a person who is ignorant of God’s holiness, and of their own sinfulness. If you choose to live in ignorance, God calls you ignorant.
10 Ungodly
For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.
Titus 2:11-12
God’s grace not only saves you—it teaches you. It teaches you to say “no” to ungodliness. If you fail to heed this teaching by continuing to indulge your worldly passions, you practice ungodliness. That makes you ungodly.
Conclusion
As you can see, God does not look favorably upon sexual immorality. He does not use soft language or euphemism when describing the sin or naming the sinner. God is angry with the wicked every day, and that includes the sexually immoral. If you call yourself a Christian but you still view pornography regularly, I invite you to make your calling and election sure. I urge you to question if you are even in the faith. God calls His children redeemed, sanctified, chosen, set apart, holy. He uses other words to describe those who are not His.
