The devil has a playbook. The devil has a pre-set way of tempting you to sin sexually. You likely know this from bitter experience. But you also know it from God’s Word. In the sixth chapter of Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul tells the believers to put on the whole armor of God so that they can stand against the wiles of the devil. Wiles means schemes. Schemes means a playbook.

The word “wiles” is methodeía in the Greek, properly, a “predictable (pre-set) method used in organized evil-doing (well-crafted trickery)” (Strong’s). It derives from the word methodos, a way of searching after something, an inquiry; a method. It means scheming, craftiness. How do you quit porn? Do you quit porn by quitting porn? Do you avoid starchy food by avoiding starchy food? Do you exercise more often by exercising more?

One of the keys to abstaining from pornography is developing healthy habits to replace this wicked one. You avoid porn by doing something else. This is what Paul has in mind when he tells you and me to avoid getting drunk by being filled with the Spirit. You avoid the one by doing the other. You quit porn by doing something else.

But this is where plenty of brothers fail. They find a healthy substitute for their sexual immorality, and purpose to do the one instead of the other. But they fix their eyes on the finish line and not on the starting blocks. They fix theirs eyes on the cure and not on the prevention. Let me show you what I mean.

My goal was to help Christian men (and myself) abstain from pornography biblically. Here I am, 10 months later, and I have not looked at any pornography since then, and neither have I masturbated. Here are some lessons I’ve learned along my journey.

Pastors don’t want to address the issue of porn
Some pastors and church elders refuse to address the issue of pornography or masturbation from the pulpit or in private in any meaningful way with brothers in the congregation.
Temptation can come anytime, anywhere
A few days ago I visited a beach on a remote lake in Northern Saskatchewan. I was the only person on the beach. I suddenly experienced a strong temptation to take matters into my own hands, as it were. I was surprised at the suddenness of the urge, and that it struck in such an odd place. I resisted it nevertheless.

Anyone who says the Bible is a book of do’s and don’ts is correct as far as quitting pornography is concerned. The cure for habitual sexual sin is essentially one thing you are to do and one thing you are not to do. Paul gives us each one at the end of the 13th chapter of his letter to the Romans. “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ,” says Paul, “and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”

“Put on the Lord Jesus Christ” is the do. You are commanded to clothe yourself with Christ. You are to put Him on in the same way that you are to “put on the full armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11). You are to adopt the spirit of Christ to such an extent that you reproduce it in your outward walk and conduct.

Some people have split this petition into two. This is wrong: for the nature of the subject makes it manifest, that it is one and the same petition. The connection of the words also shows it: for the word but, which is placed between, connects the two clauses together, as Augustine judiciously explains. If you want to be free of pornography, you must pay the price. Sexual purity doesn’t come cheap. Freedom from sexual sin can’t be purchased with church attendance or a 12-step recovery program. If you want to be free of the grip of porn and masturbation, you have to pay, and pay dearly.

Sanctification is costly. That’s what Jesus teaches. If your hand or foot causes you to sin, you cut it off and cast it from you. That’s the high price you must pay to avoid sinning. Sometimes the remedy for committing a sin is to engage in a pure act. Sometimes the way to avoid temptation is to pursue something holy. And sometimes the path to purity is to make use of what God has already provided. Such is the case with sexual immorality in general and with adultery in particular.

Conquering pornography isn’t complicated. It’s not easy, I admit, but it isn’t complicated. And yet many people make it complicated. Go online and you will find all manner of psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, counsellors, pastors, Bible teachers and others ready to tell you the many steps you must take to quit porn.

But the biblical answer is simple: “Flee sexual immorality.” That’s three simple words, and one step to victory. It worked in Paul’s day. It works today. Don’t follow the voices that say you must do something else but flee. The cure for pornography is a command you are to obey, and an action you are to take. Flee.

You are guilty of it. I am guilty of it. In the midst of our struggle with sexual sin, we cry out to God, begging Him to give us strength to forsake our sin. We beseech God to give us power to overcome sexual temptation. We pray repeatedly, week in and week out, for God to deliver us from sexual urges. The problem is, He already has. We keep asking God to give us something that He has already given us.

This is the conclusion that you and I must draw from what Peter tells us. After all, if God “has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness,” why do we need to ask Him for anything else that pertains to life and godliness? We don’t. I confessed my sin to my wife and begged for her forgiveness. I admitted to her that my repeated viewing of porn was repeated adultery against her.

One key to conquering sexual sin is specificity. Once you start describing your sins specifically, rather than seeing them in the abstract, you gain the insight you need to confess them, ask forgiveness for them, and forsake them. A valuable exercise is to take every generic mention of sexual sin and to make it apply to you specifically.

Consider the early church, for example. Jewish converts were troubling Gentile converts by telling them they had to be circumcised and keep the law. So, the church gathered and settled the matter. They proclaimed that Gentile believers in Christ had to obey only four things:

This means getting off YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, TikTok and other video-sharing sites that host inappropriate videos.

I’m not talking about pornographic video sites. I’m talking about the popular sites that host videos that feature nudity, sexual inuendo, young women in bikinis, racy music videos, undressing, sex scenes from movies and TV shows, pool scenes, shower scenes, and more. If Twitter causes you to sin, should you keep scrolling? If Facebook tempts you to sin sexually, should you keep clicking? If Instagram causes you to commit sexual immorality, should you continue swiping? If Tik Tok causes you to commit adultery, should you keep watching? No, nope, never, and negatory. The key to gaining and maintaining victory over sexual temptation is twofold: (1) know your triggers, and (2) avoid your triggers.

Jesus establishes this principle in His Sermon on the Mount. Do any social media platforms cause you to look at women to lust after them (as Jesus forbids)? Do they cause you to commit adultery in your heart? In short, do any social platforms cause you to sin? Then you must pluck them out and throw them away. This is what Jesus demands of you.

In practical terms, this means deleting your social media accounts. Not pausing them. Not uninstalling the apps from your phone but keeping the accounts active. To pluck out your eye and to cast it away you must delete, cancel, terminate and close all social accounts that cause you to sin. The primary problem with pornography is proximity. Porn is easy to view because it’s easy to find. It’s always just a few clicks or swipes away, often free of charge. This wasn’t always the case. When I was a teen, the only way to get your hands on hardcore porn was to meet a man in a dark alley off Times Square or to visit a bookstore in Amsterdam. Today, hardcore pornography is right in your pocket. If you want to conquer your habitual sin of looking at porn, you must solve your proximity problem.

This is the advice that Solomon has for his son. The key to victory over pornography isn’t fight, but flight. Your sexual purity depends not on your moral backbone nor on your strength of character nor on your level of willpower. It depends on your ability to avoid temptation in the first place. To conquer the sin of looking at pornography, you must learn to bypass—not battle—sexual temptation.

This biblical tactic comes from none other than Solomon himself. In Proverbs 5, he warns you about the strange woman, which is to say, the sexually immoral, adulterous, forbidden woman. Her lips drip honey and her mouth is smoother than oil. In other words, the sexually immoral woman is seductive and enticing. She offers you sexual pleasures that appeal to your flesh, are enjoyable in the moment, but are sinful and forbidden. She leads you to your death and destruction.

The cure for habitual sexual sin is Christ and crucifixion. Christ as the primary object of your affection. And your own crucifixion of your flesh. You need both to gain victory over pornography and masturbation: adoration and action, worship and willpower, the Savior and self-denial.

This is what the Apostle Paul means when he says you must “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” You used to walk in lewdness and lust (Romans 13:13). Now you are to walk properly, decently. And that requires both adopting something new and abandoning something old. It means embracing Christ, and forsaking the flesh.

Getting victory over pornography is an exercise in subtraction. Whenever you discover that something, or someone, or somewhere causes you to sin by looking at porn, listening to porn, or reading porn, you subtract it from your life. If you want to gain lasting victory over pornography and sexual immorality, take your focus off yourself and put it on God. The problem you face is not addiction, but rebellion. The pathway to sexual purity requires you to see your sin more clearly. You need the kind of vision that Joseph had.

Joseph was working as a slave in the house of Potiphar, the captain of the guard of the pharaoh of Egypt. Joseph was head of the household. Potiphar’s wife was soliciting Joseph daily to have sex with her. Finally, Joseph rebuked her:

“There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
Genesis 39:9

What Potiphar’s wife was proposing was straightforward enough, right? Having sex with her would make Joseph a fornicator, make Potiphar’

One of the easy deceptions of pornography is that viewing it is just an activity. Watching an X-rated video on your own, you may be deluded into thinking that your activity is just a harmless way to pass the time and release some stress. But the Bible doesn’t look upon pornography, or masturbating to pornography, or sexual immorality, as innocent activities.

Just consider the life of Joseph. After being sold into slavery and taken down to Egypt, Joseph becomes the overseer in the house of Potiphar, captain of the guard. Joseph is given responsibility for running Potiphar’s household. One day, Potiphar’s wife notices that Joseph is “handsome in form and appearance” (Gen 39:6). She lusts after him, and invites him to go to bed with her. Joseph refuses. This is how he replies:

“There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

The book of Jude in the New Testament warns you against such men, apostates who deny our Lord.

When can I expect my sexual urges to disappear?” The older brother looked at him with a puzzled smile. “I don’t know,” he replied. “You will have to ask someone who is older than I am.”

If you are a Christian man, you cannot hope that your sexual lust is going to vanish with age. You cannot expect that it will atrophy without you doing something. To defeat lust, you must take the initiative. And that initiative is described for you in the New Testament book of Galatians:

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

You discover this truth in the New Testament book of Colossians, the letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to a group of believers in the city of Colosse. The Christian men in that church almost 2,000 years ago faced the same battle you face today. Paul wrote to them:

If you want to learn how to get victory over pornography and sexual immorality, ask a brother in the Lord who has been there, done that, and won the victory. Ask someone like King David. David wrote a large portion of the Psalms. In one of those psalms, he declares one practical step that he took to prevent himself from transgressing God’s commandments. You find his declaration in Psalm 119:

“Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.”
Psalm 119:11

David is speaking to God. When he refers to “Your word,” he means God’s Word, the Holy Scriptures, particularly the law. Start at the end of the verse and you see that David had set a goal in his life. Notice that David didn’t simply want to avoid sinning. He wanted to avoid sinning “against You,” against his God.

“I, [NAME], take thee, [NAME], to be my wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge thee my troth.”

If you find yourself breaking your wedding vow these days by lusting after women you see in movies and magazines, and on websites and apps, you may be ready to make another vow. A vow that helps you break free from the bondage of habitual sexual sin. This is what King David did.

This is what Jesus says:

If you are a Christian man who wants to conquer a compulsion to watch pornography, and if you have been struggling for some time without success, your problem might be that you aren’t obeying a clear command of Jesus on this issue.

Jesus doesn’t teach explicitly about pornography, of course, but He does teach about how to win the battle with sins that involve your eyes. And that includes the sin of looking at pornographic images and videos. You find this teaching in a few places in the New Testament, in the passages in the Gospels that recount Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Here is what Jesus teaches, as recorded by His disciple Matthew:
