Flee Sexual Immorality | 1 Corinthians 6:18

The proven, biblical way to defeat pornography, avoid sex outside of marriage, and conquer other forms of sexual immorality isn’t to fight or resist or pray. You must flee.

flee sexual immorality 1 Co 6:18

Are you looking for a proven way to quit pornography? Would you like to know a tactic that your Christian brothers have been using for almost 2,000 years to defeat lust, a tactic that still works today? If God has spoken on this topic, do you want to hear what He has to say?

Then open your Bible and turn to the book of 1 Corinthians. Here you find the remedy for avoiding pornography summed up in one word: flee.

“Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.”

1 Corinthians 6:18

If you want to defeat pornography in your life, flee. If you need to conquer masturbation, flee. If you want to avoid having sex with your girlfriend or fiancé until you are married, flee.

The phrase “sexual immorality” in this passage is the Greek word porneian, which comes from porneia. This word is the root of the English words pornography and pornographic. The word means fornication, sexual immorality, whoredom (prostitution or other promiscuous sexual activity).

Sexual immorality is any act that defies God’s commands about sexual relations. Sexual immorality is any activity that involves the sex organs that does not conform to God’s revealed laws governing sexuality. God restricts sex to husbands and wives. Any sex act that is outside of a mutually respectful and loving marriage between one man and one woman is sexual immorality. According to the Bible, sexual immorality includes:

  • sex outside of marriage between a man and a woman
  • sex with animals
  • sex with close family members
  • sex with children
  • pornography

The word “flee” in this passage means to escape, to shun. It is a primary Greek verb that means to run away. This is what you must do if you intend to defeat sexual immorality, get the victory over pornography and conquer habitual sexual sin. When you first see a pornographic image, flee. When you start to lust, shun it. When you are tempted to sin sexually, run away.

Don’t stay to fight. Don’t try to resist. Don’t pray about it. And don’t think you have to see a therapist, join a 12-step recovery program, join a forum, perform a multi-day porn detox, or keep looking in the Bible for an answer. You have your answer. You know all you need to know to conquer sexual immorality. Flee.
